What software do I need to read a PDF that I borrowed from the library?

Answer

When you request a digitized book from the library, we will send it to you as a protected PDF that only you can open. If this is your first time borrowing a digitized book, you will need to download a plugin to read it. Instructions are available for downloading the plugin for various platforms.

We recommend using Adobe Acrobat to view the PDF.

Once you have installed the plugin and open the PDF, you will be asked to authenticate with your Netpass credentials. You'll only need to do this once.

If we have sent you a PDF of a digitized book, the item will be available until the date indicated in the email. Please contact iclibrary@ithaca.edu if you would like to extend this loan period.

If you are having trouble viewing the PDF after installing the app, please try the following:

  • Open Adobe reader
  • Click on Edit -> Preferences -> Security and click on Clear remembered account information
  • Close Adobe and any browsers
  • Reopen the email with the link to the PDF and reinstall the app
