Q. What happened to the dropdown menu on the main search tool that allowed us to pick whether we were searching for books, dvds, or databases? I'm finding it very clunky now to search for just books or just movies.

Answer

In the past, a search from the library homepage required you to select a “scope” for your search: Everything, Library, Databases, or Reserves. Usability testing showed that our patrons found this confusing and almost always used Everything. Testing also demonstrated that our patrons are comfortable using the filters under Tweak My Results. Therefore, we transferred the functionality from the scopes to the filters.

You can now perform searches from the homepage by just entering your search terms and hitting return. To further refine your search, use the filters. For instance, where you once used the library scope, you would now use the Library Catalog filter.

We made a short video demonstration of how to use the streamlined search.

If you're interested in limiting your results from the beginning, you could try using the search boxes on the Books, Film, and Music pages, which are pre-filtered to return only results of the appropriate type.
